Katowice Sound Department was established in 2014 as a social and educational project of Katowice City of Gardens Cultural Institution. For the last two years, we have been animating and supporting the local electronic music scene by organising sound workshops, concerts, sessions, quadraphonic experiments and, starting from 2016, the Micro-residence programme. As part of cooperation of the Coalition of Cities / European Capital of Culture 2016, we will attempt to recreate the microclimate of our Katowice activity in Wrocław.
From 15 to 21 August at a tenement house at Rynek 25, we will launch the Experimental Sound Exchange. At that time, together with invited sound artists and creators of electronic music, including dance, club as well as experimental and contemplative, we aim to discover the possibilities and ways of exploring sound and exploring by sound. We want Rynek 25 to become the ear of the city friendly to electronic sounds and an environment to enable both working in sound as well as resting in sound.
The Experimental Sound Exchange (ESE) means not only everyday afternoon and evening concerts, sessions and DJ sets open for the public. It also includes open presentations, film screenings, quadraphonic radio plays and sound workshops conducted by guests invited. But above all, we would like the ESE to become a place for exchanging experiences, ideas and sounds, joint sessions, collaborations, improvisations, rehearsals and fun with the playing and audio equipment. The starting point is the multichannel system of sound emission which enables to explore acoustic properties of spaces from both technical as well as artistic points of view. Just like the telephone exchange in the past, we hope that the Central Office of Sound Experiments will become a cluster of ideas aimed mainly at binding, fitting, tuning, interconnecting, bonding and synchronising various creative perspectives.
We would like to welcome all those interested in sound experiments both from the practical and theoretical side as well as the authors and audiences. We would also like to welcome everyone who is curious about us and would like to momentarily retune their hearing to unusual acoustic stimuli.
